Title: Rolling Element Bearings
Date Posted: Friday, 02 August 2013 17:46

Some of the most critical components on a fan are the bearings.  Although there are many types of bearings, we will focus on only three – the single row ball bearing, the cylindrical roller bearing, and the spherical roller bearing.  The bearing designs, load ratings, maximum safe operating speeds, seal choices, and many other items will dictate the choice of bearing for a given application.

Rolling element bearings are basically two races separated by a set of balls or rollers.  The balls/rollers are held apart from each other by a cage or retainer, which can be metallic or synthetic.  The cage not only spaces the balls apart, but also keeps the lubrication evenly distributed on the various parts of the bearing.

Title: Hartzell Air Movement increases quality with new powder coat paint booth!
Date Posted: Tuesday, 23 July 2013 14:28

Hartzell Air Movement is now offering powder coated products! The addition of their new paint booth will increase product consistency and quality control. This new process is also safer on the environment compared to liquid paints since it does not contain any solvents. Powder coating is universally accepted and specified as the Best Available Control Technology (BACT) to reduce air pollution. Tom Gustafson, Chief Technology Officer comments, “Our powder coat paint booth has many advantages. The process is inherently safer and cleaner than other paint lines and the paint covers our products better, even in tiny crevasses as well as around edges.”

Title: Fan Efficiency and Fan Types
Date Posted: Thursday, 27 June 2013 20:12

In recent months, there has been an increased curiosity about fan efficiency.  This is a normal reaction to word that the DOE is going to start regulating fan efficiency.  We have also discussed the work that is being done to get fan efficiency levels specified in the ASHRAE codes, the IGCC codes, and other places.  The specifications and regulations for fan efficiency will eventually include not only the peak efficiencies available, but also a requirement to select the fan within a certain range from the peak efficiencies.

Ultimately, the goal is to reduce the energy consumption from fan usage, whether that comes from proper fan design, proper fan selection, proper system design and installation, or proper maintenance.  In order to understand what is being regulated, we must first start with a basic understanding of what fan efficiency is, how it gets used, and how different fan types will result in different fan efficiency levels.
